Shoulder and Sports Medicine

Biceps Tenodesis

Releasing the damaged long head of the biceps tendon from inside the shoulder and anchoring it to the upper arm bone to relieve front-of-shoulder pain while preserving biceps strength.

What it is

Knee Osteotomy

An osteotomy cuts and repositions a portion of bone to improve knee alignment or kneecap mechanics.
High tibial osteotomy corrects alignment through the upper shin, shifting load off the worn inner knee. Distal femoral osteotomy does the same through the lower thigh for the outer knee. Tibial tubercle osteotomy moves the patellar tendon attachment to improve kneecap tracking.

Knee Osteotomy

Who It Helps

Osteotomy fits active patients with abnormal alignment, focal cartilage damage, early arthritis or recurrent kneecap instability who want to preserve their natural joint rather than replace it.It is often combined with cartilage restoration or ligament reconstruction, because a realigned knee is what lets those repairs last.
Knee Osteotomy

What to Expect

Surgery under general anesthesia, usually one to two hours, longer when combined with cartilage or ligament work.Preoperative standing X-rays and alignment measurements set the exact correction. The bone is secured with a specialized plate and screws. Most patients go home the same day or after one night, in a knee brace with crutches. For Utah Valley skiers and runners in their thirties and forties with one worn side of the knee, osteotomy is the joint-preserving alternative we discuss before replacement. Dr. Christensen, Dr. Taylor, Dr. Carlson and Dr. Wallentine operate at Utah Valley Hospital and Spanish Fork Hospital.
Knee Osteotomy

Recovery Timeline

Six weeks protecting the osteotomy with crutches and limited weight bearing while the bone begins to heal; therapy controls swelling and keeps motion and muscle activation. Weight bearing increases from six to twelve weeks as X-rays show healing.
Low-impact activity such as cycling and swimming returns around months three to four, demanding recreation at four to six months, and running or impact sports between six and twelve months depending on the procedure.
Milestones
Week 0 to 6Crutches, protected weight
Week 6 to 12Weight bearing as bone heals
Month 3 to 4Cycling and swimming
Month 6 to 12Running, impact sport

Risks and Considerations

Infection, blood clots, stiffness, nerve or blood vessel injury, delayed healing or nonunion, hardware irritation and incomplete relief are the main risks. An osteotomy does not reverse existing cartilage damage or rule out future arthritis. In well-selected patients it meaningfully improves pain, stability and activity and can delay or avoid joint replacement.
