What it is

Total Knee Replacement

Total knee replacement removes the worn cartilage and a thin layer of bone from the end of the thigh bone and top of the shin bone, then caps them with metal components separated by a polyethylene bearing. The kneecap may be resurfaced as well.Dr. Wallentine plans each knee on a CT-based three-dimensional model and executes the cuts with the Mako robotic arm, which keeps the saw inside the planned boundary.

Who It Helps

Candidates have knee arthritis with pain that limits walking, stairs and sleep despite weight management, strengthening, bracing, anti-inflammatories and injections, with X-rays that show bone-on-bone wear.Age alone is not the deciding factor. Function and quality of life are.

What to Expect

Surgery takes one to two hours under spinal or general anesthesia with a nerve block. Many patients walk the same afternoon and go home the same day or after one night. You will stand and take steps with a physical therapist before you leave.Dr. Wallentine has replaced knees in Utah Valley for more than three decades and now plans every one on the Mako robotic platform. Dr. Wallentine operates at Utah Valley Hospital and Mountain View Hospital.
Total Knee Replacement

Recovery Timeline

A walker for one to two weeks, then a cane.Driving at about four weeks for a right knee, sooner for a left. Most daily activity by six weeks, and full recovery, including the last of the swelling and stiffness, by six to twelve months.
Physical therapy starts within days and continues for six to twelve weeks. Bending the knee early is the single most important job.
Milestones
Day 0Walking with therapy
Week 1 to 2Walker, then cane
Week 4Driving (right knee)
Month 6 to 12Last swelling gone

Risks and Considerations

Infection, blood clots and stiffness requiring manipulation are the main early risks.Implant loosening or wear over fifteen to twenty-five years is the main late risk.About one in five patients report some ongoing discomfort even after a technically good replacement. We discuss expectations plainly beforehand.
