Find your care · Shoulder

My shoulder hurts and it is not getting better.

Reaching overhead, sleeping on that side, lifting a bag into the car. Shoulder pain that lasts more than a few weeks usually has a specific cause we can find.

Find your care · Knee

My knee hurts and I am having trouble walking.

A twist on the slopes, a pop on the court, or a knee that has simply worn down over years. Knees tell us a lot by how and when they hurt.

Find your care · Hip

I need a hip replacement, or I think I might.

Groin pain with walking, a limp you did not used to have, trouble with socks and shoes. Hip problems tend to show up in the groin and thigh, not the side.

Find your care · Hand and wrist

My hand or wrist is hurting, numb, or stuck.

Fingers that fall asleep at night, a thumb that aches opening jars, a finger that catches and snaps straight. Three hand surgeons see these every day.

Find your care · Elbow

My elbow hurts, or my ring finger is numb.

The elbow carries the funny bone nerve, the biceps anchor and the forearm tendons. Problems here are often felt in the hand as much as the elbow.

My foot or ankle hurts with every step.

Heel pain first thing in the morning, a bunion that rules out your shoes, an ankle that rolls on every trail. Everything below the knee is Dr. Hoopes territory.

I am an athlete and I need to get back.

A torn ACL, a dislocated shoulder, a meniscus that locks, an Achilles that popped. Whether you compete or just refuse to stop, we plan the return before we plan the surgery.

What Patients Tell Us

Knee

A pop and immediate swelling after a twist usually means a ligament, most often the ACL.
Catching, locking or pain along the joint line points to the meniscus.Stiffness in the morning, pain on stairs, and swelling after activity, building over months or years, is the pattern of arthritis. Giving way without pain often means instability.

Where the Pain Comes From

The ACL keeps the shin from sliding forward under the thigh; it tears with pivoting and landing. The two menisci are shock-absorbing cartilage pads that tear with twisting or fray with age.Cartilage covering the bone ends wears with time, weight and old injuries, producing osteoarthritis. Which structure is involved decides whether you see a sports medicine surgeon or a joint replacement surgeon. We have both.
