How We Approach the Foot and Ankle

Foot and Ankle

Dr. Hoopes completed his foot and ankle fellowship at the University of Washington and Harborview Medical Center, the regional trauma center for five states.
Complex fractures and reconstructions are where he trained.Anything below the knee is in scope: a bunion that finally hurts in every shoe, an ankle that keeps rolling, an Achilles that popped on the court, or a heel that aches with the first steps every morning. Most foot and ankle conditions start with conservative care. When surgery is right, Dr. Hoopes operates at hospitals and surgery centers across the valley, in both the Intermountain and HCA systems.

When to See Us

A pop in the back of the ankle with sudden weakness pushing off, a foot or ankle that cannot bear weight after an injury, or a deformity that was not there yesterday should be seen within a day or two.Heel pain, bunions and ankles that keep rolling have usually been tolerated for months. Those deserve a plan, and most of them resolve without surgery.Diabetic patients with any new redness, swelling, warmth or wound on the foot are seen the same day.

Your First Visit

Standing X-rays of the foot and ankle, taken on site, show alignment under load, which a lying-down X-ray cannot. The exam covers the whole limb, because the ankle has to be understood as part of the leg.Dr. Hoopes trained at Harborview, the regional trauma center for five states, and complex fractures and reconstructions are where he trained. Most first visits end with a conservative plan, a specific one, and a date to check on it.

Podiatrist or Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon?

Both treat the foot.An orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon completed medical school, a five-year orthopedic surgery residency covering the whole musculoskeletal system, then a fellowship focused on the foot and ankle. That training matters most for fractures, deformity correction, ankle replacement and reconstruction after injury, where the ankle has to be understood as part of the whole limb.
Dr. Hoopes is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a member of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.
