What it is

Ankle Fracture Repair

The ankle is a hinge formed by the shin bone, the fibula and the talus.
Fractures that shift the bones even a few millimeters change how the joint loads and lead to arthritis. Repair restores the exact alignment and holds it with plates and screws.Dr. Hoopes trained at Harborview, where complex ankle fractures are a daily case.

Who It Helps

Surgery fits fractures that are displaced, unstable, involve both sides of the ankle, or disrupt the ligament joining the two leg bones.Stable, non-displaced fractures can heal in a boot, and we recommend that when it is right.

What to Expect

Outpatient or overnight surgery under general or regional anesthesia, one to two hours.A splint afterward, then a boot.Severely swollen ankles are sometimes splinted for several days before surgery so the skin can recover.Trail, ski and pickleball injuries keep ankle fractures common here; Dr. Hoopes fixes them at hospitals in both Utah Valley systems. Dr. Hoopes operates at Utah Valley Hospital and Timpanogos Regional Hospital.
