Causes

A fall from standing height in an adult with osteoporosis is by far the most common cause.Younger adults break the hip only in high-energy trauma.Preventing the next fall and treating bone density are part of the care.

How We Diagnose It

X-rays show most hip fractures.MRI or CT finds the hairline fractures that X-rays miss. Medical evaluation happens in parallel so surgery is not delayed.Surgery within twenty-four to forty-eight hours improves outcomes.Seen the same day; surgery within a day or two at a Utah Valley hospital gets patients standing again. Dr. Wallentine, Dr. Christensen and Dr. Taylor operate at Utah Valley Hospital and Mountain View Hospital.

Treatment Options

Fractures below the neck are fixed with a rod or plate and screws.
Displaced neck fractures in older adults are treated with a partial or total hip replacement, which lets the patient walk immediately.Rehabilitation starts the day after surgery, and bone health treatment follows.
