What it is

Total Hip Replacement

Total hip replacement removes the worn ball and resurfaces the socket, replacing them with a metal or ceramic ball on a stem and a cup with a polyethylene liner.
The direct anterior approach reaches the joint from the front, between muscles rather than through them. Dr. Wallentine also uses Mako robotic planning to position the cup and set leg length precisely.

Who It Helps

Candidates have hip arthritis with groin or thigh pain that limits walking, sleep and daily tasks despite anti-inflammatories, activity changes and injections, with bone-on-bone wear on X-ray.Avascular necrosis and hip fractures in older adults are other common reasons.
Total Hip Replacement

What to Expect

One to two hours of surgery under spinal or general anesthesia. Most patients stand and walk within hours and many go home the same day.Anterior approach patients generally have no hip precautions about bending or crossing the legs. The direct anterior approach lets most Utah Valley hip patients go home the same day without the bending and crossing restrictions of older approaches. Dr. Wallentine and Dr. Christensen operate at Utah Valley Hospital and Mountain View Hospital.
Total Hip Replacement

Recovery Timeline

A walker or cane for one to two weeks.Driving at about two to four weeks. Most daily activity by six weeks and full recovery by three to six months.Hip replacement is among the most reliably successful operations in medicine. Pain relief is usually immediate and striking.
