What it is

Revision Hip Replacement

Over time, a hip replacement can loosen from bone, its bearing can wear, it can dislocate repeatedly, or it can become infected.
Revision surgery removes the failed components and rebuilds the joint.Revisions range from exchanging a worn liner to reconstructing bone loss with grafts and specialized implants.

Who It Helps

Candidates have pain, instability or infection in a previous hip replacement confirmed by imaging and, when infection is suspected, by joint fluid testing. Many revisions are planned over several visits, and infected joints are often treated in two stages.

What to Expect

Revision surgery is longer than the original replacement, often two to four hours, under general or spinal anesthesia, with a hospital stay of one to several days.Dr. Wallentine plans revisions from CT imaging and has the original implant records retrieved whenever possible.Revisions of hips first replaced elsewhere are common here; bring your original surgical records or tell us where the surgery was done and we will request them. Dr. Wallentine operates at Utah Valley Hospital and Mountain View Hospital.

Recovery Timeline

Risks and Considerations

Revision carries higher risks than a first replacement: dislocation, infection, fracture, nerve injury and blood clots.Bone quality and the reason for failure drive the odds.Your surgeon will be specific about your situation before you decide.
