What it is

Revision Knee Replacement

A knee replacement can loosen, wear, become unstable, stiffen, or become infected.
Revision surgery removes the old components, rebuilds any bone loss with augments or stems, and implants a new knee designed for revision.Infected knees are usually treated in two stages: removal with an antibiotic spacer, then a new implant after the infection clears.

Who It Helps

Candidates have a previous knee replacement with pain, swelling, instability or recurrent infection, confirmed by X-rays, blood tests and often joint fluid analysis.Unexplained pain alone is evaluated carefully before anyone agrees to revise, because revising a knee without a clear cause rarely helps.

What to Expect

Two to four hours of surgery under general or spinal anesthesia, with a hospital stay of one to several nights.Dr. Wallentine plans revisions from CT imaging and retrieves the original implant records whenever they exist.Infected knees are managed with the hospital infectious disease teams at Utah Valley Hospital and Timpanogos Regional in a two-stage plan. Dr. Wallentine operates at Utah Valley Hospital and Mountain View Hospital.

Recovery Timeline

A walker for several weeks, then a cane.Physical therapy for three months or more. Most daily activity by three months and full recovery by nine to twelve months.Motion is the priority, as with a first replacement, and revision knees can be stiffer to start.
Milestones
Weeks 1 to 6Walker, then cane

Risks and Considerations

Infection, stiffness, instability, fracture, wound problems and blood clots are all more common than with a first replacement. The outcome is generally good but less predictable. We spend extra time on expectations before revision surgery for exactly that reason.
