What it is

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes damages the nerves and circulation of the feet.
Numbness means injuries go unnoticed, poor circulation means they heal slowly, and weakened bones can collapse, a condition called Charcot foot.Diabetic foot care spans the whole spectrum: protective footwear and callus care, offloading casts for ulcers, surgical cleaning of infection, correction of pressure-causing deformities, and reconstruction of a collapsed Charcot foot.

What to Expect

Depends entirely on the problem.Office care for footwear and callus management. Total contact casting for ulcers. Outpatient or inpatient surgery for infection, deformity and Charcot reconstruction.Reconstruction is planned carefully around circulation and blood sugar control. We coordinate with Utah Valley primary care, endocrinology and wound care teams, and see new foot wounds the same day. Dr. Hoopes provides this treatment in clinic, in Provo and Orem.

Recovery Timeline

Ulcers heal over weeks to months with strict offloading.Reconstruction recovery is long, often three to six months without weight on the foot, then protective footwear for life. The goal is a plantigrade, shoe-able foot that keeps you walking and out of the hospital.

Risks and Considerations

Wound healing problems, infection, hardware failure and the possibility of amputation despite best efforts are real risks in this population.Blood sugar control and circulation drive outcomes more than any surgical technique. We are honest about the odds and aggressive about prevention.
